Startup Advice from 5 Female Entrepreneurs

While Thrive is not a startup, (we’re celebrating 11 years in business!), I was recently interviewed by Lendio for this article, 5 Female Entrepreneurs Share Startup Advice for Women. As a Seattle female entrepreneur, I love connecting with our business owners and leaders in the business world. Iron sharpens iron, and surrounding yourself with other business minded visionaries makes you wiser.

What advice do you have for female entrepreneurs starting their businesses?

Do you know a Seattle female entrepreneur that is doing cool things? We’d love to hear about it! A lot of women play small in the entrepreneurial world. I’d like to see that change. What if instead of saying, ” I have a small business”, or “a side hustle,” or “a little hobby,” we tooted our own horn and spoke the truth?

I’m a business owner running a multi-million dollar company that I built from the ground up! Shouldn’t we be bolder in our accomplishments? I know some men may struggle with the same confidence but it’s more common in ladies. We are taught to be “humble” and often we take this too far mistaking confidence for pride. To avoid being prideful we downplay our successes. I want to see women rise up and speak honestly about their accomplishments to inspire others.

Here’s one nugget of advice I gave as a Seattle female entrepreneur to other women through Lendio. I’ve got a lot of other things to share, but I had to pick just one for the purpose of this article.

Invest in Yourself

“Investing in professional growth will always deliver ROI. It’s hard to pull the trigger on investing in that copywriting class or that accounting course, but it’ll pay dividends. When first starting a business, it may be hard to budget for investing in yourself. However, your brain is your most valuable asset. Growing your mind is never a waste of money. A free way I’ve invested in continued education is using my library membership. I use a library app to check out business audiobooks. I love to learn and while getting to a physical class is hard, streaming an audiobook on my phone is easy.”

As for a marketing suggestion I offer my favorite quote:

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but no one else does. ” -Steuart Henderson Britt
